Plastic v Cosmetic v Reconstructive Surgeons

The terms plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery mean different things.

Plastic surgery refers to operations that alter anatomy to make it better, both functionally and aesthetically. Examples are nose reshaping so that it looks better and breathes easier, correcting an underdeveloped breast, trimming heavy upper eyelids that obstruct vision.

Reconstructive surgery returns anatomy to its original form. Examples include repairing cut tendons of a hand, or rebuilding a breast lost through cancer.

Cosmetic surgery aims to improve on the person’s original form to make it more beautiful. Examples include face and breast lift surgery and liposuction.

The different types of surgeons

Only qualified specialists who have completed the required training and examinations are allowed to call themselves "Plastic Surgeons" which equates to approximately 8-10 years of additional specialists surgical training after basic medical qualifications have been achieved.

However any doctor may call themselves a cosmetic surgeon without having undergone the rigor of formal training and accreditation.
