Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are materilas that help to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, lines, folds and indented scars. As we age, environmental factors & muscle stress all lead to a decrease in the skin's collagen support structure and moisture balance.

This results in the development of fine lines, deeper wrinkles, contour depressions and general loss of volume of the skin. A variety of treatments can be used to fill out the lines, plump up depressions & restore volume to the face, giving a more youthful appearance & lessening the effects of time. Dermal fillers can also be used to enhance facila features by adding volume to lips or cheeks.

There is no single treatment that is right for everybody. The most appropriate treatment for you, depending on your lifestyle, age & medical history will be discussed in detail at your initial consultation. A fully costed treatment plan will then be offered for your consideration.

Treatment options include

Collagen based filling agents

  • Deeper lines, wrinkles, scars and lip enhancement.
  • Fine surface lines, around eye area and for those with very fine skin.
  • Moderate surface lines, areas of high muscle stress and overlaying etched lines after an anti wrinkle treatment.

Poly -L- lactic  based filling agent

Some fillers are particularly beneficial for loss of volume in the cheek area, nose to mouth depressions, marionette depressions and general firming of early stage looseness of skin. Lactic acid is a natural component of our skin. This type of product acts to stimulate our skins collagen production thereby, thickening and volumising the skin. It is the only product that 'plumps up' thin skin and restores fullness to the face. Gradual improvement is seen over 2 months as collagen growth is stimulated. An Allergy test is not required. Moderate depression require 2 treatments, deeper depressions can require up to 5 treatments. Top ups can be required every 12-18 months. Patients experience mild to moderate discomfort and local and topical anaesthetics are used to minimise this, we also use ice pre and post treatment to numb area & reduce possibility of bruising. The advantage of this type of filler is a longer lasting correction up to 12 to 18 months, a natural and  youthful looking result and a slow, gradual improvement means no-one need know !

After treatment the patient can expect

  • Mild to moderate redness
  • Mild to moderate swelling (greater volume of product injected)
  • Oral area - moderate to significant swelling (usually mostly settled by next day, but may last up to 3 days).
  • Bruising a possibility.
  • Massage very important in initial week to ensure smooth & even growth of collagen.

Hyaluronic acid based filling agents

Hyaluronic acid is naturally occuring in the body, it holds water, hydrates and gives volume to our skin. As we age the distribution of our hyaulronic acid diminishes. An injection of a hyaluronic acid based filler replenishes lost skin volume and improves your look by enhancing your profile, creating fuller lips and smoothing out lines and wrinkles. These fillers are not permanent and are absorbed over time. The effects typically last 6 months to a year.

After treatment the patient can expect

  • Mild to moderate redness
  • Mild to moderate swelling (greater volume of product injected)
  • Oral area - moderate to significant swelling (usually mostly settled by next day, but may last up to 3 days).
  • Bruising a possibility.
