Telehealth: video consultation at home via Skype.

It’s not always easy or convenient to get to us. Especially if you’re in a rural area, interstate or overseas. Then again, depending on the nature of your enquiry, you might not be physically capable or, even, wish to venture away from home. We completely understand.

But you can still have a candid, face-to-face interview with one of our surgeons or nurses thanks to the latest technology: a Telehealth consultation via the Skype application on your computer. (If you’re not aware of Skype, see below.)

In the privacy of your own home, we can conduct a video consultation that’s virtually the same as being here. And the good news is our fee for a Telehealth consultation is no more than if you were actually attending our clinic, although the cost at your end will depend on your Internet plan (again, see below).

All we need beforehand is for you to send us some background paperwork and, if your procedure is medically indicated, get a referral from your doctor so you can claim it back from Medicare.

Of course, prior to some procedures, a video consultation would need to be complemented by a physical examination along with pre-operational photography and a garment fitting (if required). However, this can be undertaken subsequently or even, possibly, on the day of surgery. We’ll certainly let you know what your next steps are during the Telehealth consultation.

What equipment do I need to have a Telehealth consultation?

You may already have what you need at home:

  • a computer equipped with a web camera and speakers, so we can see and hear each other;
  • connection to broadband Internet; and
  • the Skype application installed and updated.

If you don’t already have it, the basic Skype software is free to download and to use. It allows your computer to be used as a video phone. The calls therefore usually cost nothing, apart from the cost of your Internet usage, which will vary with your individual plan.
