This is tough love for skin that’s seen better days. Whilst it may sound harsh, a chemical peel performed by a fully qualified doctor, such as we have at Adelaide Plastic Surgery, is actually a very safe way to slough off a layer of skin and reveal the younger you underneath. This is a treatment for men and women of all ages and skin types, addressing problems such as discolouration, photo-ageing from sun damage, non-active acne, or skin with poor texture and appearance.
The Easy TCA peel we use is made up of an alpha-hydroxy acid solution and a cream which your doctor will apply. It contains active peeling ingredients along with vitamins, antioxidants, trace elements and other stimulating, anti-ageing, anti-acne and lightening properties. The cream relieves the slight burning of the acid. That’s why you need to leave it on the skin to act until the morning after your treatment.
AHAs are natural acid compounds derived from food sources (for example, the glycolic acid found in sugar cane). These compounds have unique properties that can improve the skin.
Your skin will look and feel softer and smoother within two weeks. After four weeks, your skin tone will be more even and fine wrinkles will often reduce.
You need to know up front what’s going to happen and when, so you’re not confused or alarmed. For example, immediately after your treatment, you will look frosty white due to the chemical reaction. This will settle over the next hour or so. Then, generally, it can take two to three days for your skin to peel. And it may flake off or it may come off in sheets. Some people don’t peel at all; others experience a brown discolouration. This is all normal and varies with each individual.
Most of our patients prefer to take a few days off to get through the peeling phase.
This treatment is not recommended if you are allergic to milk, grapes, apples or citrus fruits. If you use Retin-A, you need to discontinue it a week prior to the use of AHAs.
