Everybody has three ages: there’s how old you are, how old you act and how old you look. We may not be able to do much about the first age but we sure can do something about the other two. Fighting age starts with your mental attitude. Then again, even if you’re thinking young, the state of your skin may be giving away the secret.
Sun exposure, diet, hormones and smoking can add years to your appearance. And it’s the outer layers of your skin that are most vulnerable to the environmental factors, reflecting structural and volume changes in the deeper layers below. Most commonly, our skin texture is affected by dryness, wrinkles and a build-up of excess dead skin cells as our natural exfoliation processes slow down.
It’s no accident that tanning describes what we do when we go out in the sun and what we do to produce leather. The dark pigmentation our skin develops with exposure to either the sun or a solarium is actually a sign of skin damage. Age spots and freckles are permanent alterations to our skin’s appearance. But the sun isn’t the only enemy. Some people also experience specific skin conditions such as acne, rosacea (redness) or psoriasis that can alter the texture and pigmentation of their skin.
